The Rainbow Fish

Materials:

This lesson requires 8.5x11 white paper, 12x18 what paper, pencils, crayons, water colors, tempera paint, paint brushes, scissors, elmers glue, silver paper. They will also read the book The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister.

 

Learning Objectives:

The students will be able to:

  • recognize and describe what the moral of the The Rainbow Fish by participating in a discussion about the book.

  • identify and explain what patterns are by participating in a discussion about fish scales.

  • identify and apply knowledge of all the colors in the rainbow by creating a fish out of crayons and watercolors using all of the colors in the rainbow.

  • compose and develop a habitat for their fish using tempera paint.

  • recognize and recall why they put a shiny scale on their fish by participating in a closure at the end of the lesson

 

Description of Lesson:

This lesson will be done with a Kindergarten art class. Students will be exploring and discussing different colors, patterns, and habitats. The teacher will read The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister to the whole class. Students will have a discussion on the book. Students will draw, watercolor, and cut out a fish on 8.5x11 white paper. The students will also paint an underwater habitat out of tempera paint on 12x18 white paper. The students will finish by gluing their fish onto their habitat and adding a little shiny scale that they cut out onto their fish.  

 

Anticipated Length of the Lesson:

This lesson is expected to take five days (35 minutes).

 

Sequence of Daily Lessons:  

  • Day 1: The Rainbow Fish; Today the teacher will read and discuss the book, The Rainbow Fish. Students will verbally answer questions about the book: What is the book about? What did you notice about the fish? Color, shapes, and patterns? What does habitat mean? What do you notice about their habitat? The teacher will demo how to draw a fish along with different patterns they could try. Students will then draw their fish on 8 ½ x 11 white paper with crayons.  Students can make as many fish as they would like.

  • Day 2: Watercolor; Teacher will begin the class by asking the students what it means to share. The teacher will relate sharing the shiny scale to sharing classroom materials, like watercolor sets. The teacher will demo water coloring the fish. Student will spend the rest of the class watercoloring.

  • Day 3: Habitat; Teacher will recap what a habitat is and ask what would be found in a fish habitat. The teacher will demo painting a fish habitat on 12x18 white paper. The students will then spend the rest of the class painting their habitat.

  • Day 4: Habitat; Teacher will recap what a habitat is and what would be found in a fish habitat. Teacher will demo adding details to their habitat like seaweed and rocks. Teacher will quickly demo how to cut their fish. Students will spend the rest of the class painting their habitat. Students who finish early will cut out their fish.

  • Day 5: Final Details: The teacher will demo cutting out fish and gluing it onto their habitat. Teacher will demo cutting out silver paper into scale shape and glueing on. The students will spend the rest of the class working.
