About Island Roots

Hi, my name is Courtney Minnehan and I created this company when I was a freshman in high school. I started off  making Jewelry for myself using my mom's scrap metal. After a while, all my peers had me making pieces for them and their friends. That was when I decided that I wanted to make a little business out of it. I first made a Facebook page of all my pieces, where my friends could go through and pick out the ones they wanted. I then started doing craft shows around Martha's Vineyard. All of this lead to me making this website, the first official website for Island Roots.

My Background

My mom started to teach me how to make jewelry at a very young age. She taught me the basics like how to use a torch and how to set a stone into metal. A lot of the techniques I used while developing my own style and creating this  line now were techniques I taught myself how to do. The first line of jewelry I ever made was beach glass wrapping when I was in sixth grade. Whether people bought that jewelry because it was any good or if it was because I was so young is still unknown to me. After doing Beach glass wrapping, I took about one year off from  making jewelry as a whole, before I started working on Island Roots.
