Materials:

This lesson requires 12x18 construction paper, chalk pastels, cray pas, scrap construction paper, scissors, and glue sticks.

 

Learning Objectives:  

The students will be able to:

  • identify and explain what Cubism is by participating in a discussion about Pablo Picasso’s work.

  • identify and explain what warm, cool, analogous, and grayscale colors are by participating in a discussion about the color wheel.

  • investigate and explore blending different cray pas colors together when creating their three new colors.

  • design and create a well crafted self portrait that demonstrates the Cubist style.

  • participate in the classroom community while also putting effort into their project.

  • discuss and explain their self-portrait using vocabulary words from this unit by participate in a class critique

 

Description of Lesson:

This lesson will be done with an 8th grade art class. Students will be exploring and discussing paintings done by Picasso during the Cubism art period. Students will draw their face on 12x18 construction paper (color is of their choice). They will draw their facial features on small pieces of paper. Students will glue features onto their face and finish coloring in everything with cray pas.

 

Anticipated Length of the Lesson:

This lesson is expected to take four days (40 minutes).

 

Sequence of Daily Lessons:  

  • Day 1: Discussion; The teacher will lead a discussion about Cubism and the artist Picasso. Teacher will show students different paintings done by picasso. Teacher will discuss the guidelines for the project. Teacher will demo drawing their head on a 12x18 piece of construction paper. Teacher will also demo drawing and cutting out facial features. Teacher will demo folding a piece of manila paper in half, putting their name on it, and putting all of her facial features into it. Students will spend the rest of the class working. Clean up will happen 5 minutes prior to the end of class.

  • Day 2: Studio day; Teacher will begin the class by quickly going over where they left off last class. Teacher will remind students to take their time. The teacher will demo how to blend cray pas. Teacher will discuss different techniques to blend cray pas. Students will spend the rest of the class working. Clean up will happen 5 minutes prior to the end of class.

  • Day 3: Studio day; Teacher will begin the class by quickly going over the last stages of the project. Teacher will remind students, to take their time, blend their colors to make at least three new colors, and to make their features different scales. Students will spend the rest of the class working. Students who do not finish their project this class will have to come in before or after school to finish it. Clean up will happen 5 minutes prior to the end of class.

  • Day 4: Critique; Teacher will begin the class by quickly recapping what the project was about. Teacher will remind students to get out their critique handouts. Teacher will pick on students to talk about their work.
