Crazy Dr. Seuss Houses

Materials:

This lesson requires 12x4 white paper, crayons, and watercolor.

 

Learning Objectives:  

The students will be able to:

  • identify and explain what Dr. Seuss’s illustrations look like by participating in a discussion about his work.

  • create an abstract neighborhood using crayons and watercolors.

  • investigate and explore using bright colors by creating an interesting neighborhood with crayons and watercolors.

  • investigate and explore patterns when creating their houses and backgrounds.

 

Description of Lesson:

This lesson will be done with a kindergarten art class. Teacher will read Oh, The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss. Students will discuss what abstract, illustrations, and patterns means. Students will be exploring and drawing abstract houses similar to the style of Dr. Seuss. Students will practice not scribbling, controlled line marks, and taking their time. Students will add faces and use unrealistic colors for their houses. Students will be using crayons and water colors.

 

Anticipated Length of the Lesson:

This lesson is expected to take 2 days (40 minutes).

 

Sequence of Daily Lessons:  

  • Day 1: Discussion & Drawing; The teacher will show examples from the Dr. Seuss book Oh, The Places You’ll Go. The teacher will ask the students what abstract means. The teacher will demo drawing houses out of crayon. The teacher will encourage the students to take their time and add lots of details. The teacher will ask the students if their houses should have faces, if the roofs should be shaped like hair. Students will then spend the rest of the class drawing their houses.   

  • Day 2: Finish & Share; Teacher will begin the class by asking the students if they can find something in the room that is abstract and explain why it is abstract. Teacher will also ask a few questions about what their houses look like. Do they have faces, do they have trees in their yard, are there animals in the trees. The teacher will encourage the students to add any last detail before they start watercoloring. The teacher will demo water coloring. Student will spend the rest of the class watercoloring. If extra time at the end of class after cleanup, students will lay their work down on their tables and everyone will get a chance to see everyones pieces.
